The Pittsburgh Pirates are getting ready for three games set this weekend at PNC Park against the New York Mets.
This would be Mitch Keller’s turn in the rotation, but a season-ending injury with his right arm will bring Carmen Mlodzinski back into the rotation. Mlodzinski last started a game on May 25 but was moved to the bullpen for June and July. Now that the calendar has turned to August, he is back in the rotation as the team’s fifth starter.
He started against the Mets in the first series of the season back on March 29, where he pitched 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs as the Pirates won 4-3 in 10 innings at Citi Field.
The Mets are giving the ball to rookie Zac Thornton, who is making his seventh start of the season. He is 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA. In his last start on August 1 against the Miami Marlins, he pitched 4.2 innings, gave up six hits, and took a 6-2 loss at home.
With Mlodzinski back in the rotation, the Pirates hope that he can help the team in a position of need with the starting rotation in a bind.
