BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Southern University held its spring showcase Saturday in rainy conditions.
Head coach Marshall Faulk had former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch on the sidelines watching the action. Lynch and Jaguars offensive line coach Donald Penn were Oakland Raiders teammates.
The defense made its presence felt on the opening drive. Ashton Strother rolled out and was intercepted by Ty Lee.
Lee is competing for a starting safety role after being a rotational piece last season.
The offense scored a few plays later. Barry Remo took the sweep, turned up the sideline, and ran into the end zone.

Strother threw two interceptions but also threw two touchdowns. He connected with Kobe Brown and Matthew Berenji. Berenji is a transfer from Long Beach City College.
“I believe today they did something that I have been asking them to do,” Faulk said. “Obviously, you are going to catch the balls when you are wide open, but the contested catches. That’s what I want to see. When you are playing in regular games, you are going to have a lot of wide-open balls, but if we want to win the SWAC and win the Celebration Bowl, in games like that, we have to have guys who are going to catch contested balls. Those fifty-fifty balls receivers have to win them, and today we did that.”
