GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The No. 3 Boston University men’s ice hockey team fell at No. 7 North Dakota, 7-2, on Friday night at Ralph Englestad Arena.

North Dakota (3-1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first frame before making it 6-0 early in the third period. BU (3-1-0) tallied twice in the final 20 minutes, with senior Tristan Amonte and junior Quinn Hutson each scoring their first goal of the season.

Senior Matt Copponi picked up his first point as a Terrier with the primary assist on Amonte’s strike while freshman Cole Hutson had the primary helper on his brother’s marker. Sophomores Tom Willander and Shane Lachance also added one assist apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

    • North Dakota scored a power-play goal just 2:37 into the proceedings and added another goal on its second man advantage at the 6:22 mark.

    • The Fighting Hawks then scored three more goals in the frame to hold a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes.

    • Junior Quinn Hutson hit the post during a BU power play in the first minute of the second stanza.

    • The Fighting Hawks thought they extended their lead to 6-0 late in the second, but BU successfully challenged the play for being offside.

    • North Dakota did push the score to 6-0 just 40 seconds into the third period.

    • Amonte answered just 57 seconds later. Copponi collected the puck in his own zone, dangled through one defender in the neutral zone and skated around another defender in the North Dakota zone before dishing the puck to Amonte in front. Amonte beat T.J. Semptimphelter.

    • The Hutsons connected on the power play with 14:06 to go, as Cole found Quinn for a one-timer in the left circle.

    • Sophomore Max Lacroix made a terrific glove save on a breakaway bid with 12:30 to play to keep the deficit at four, but the Fighting Hawks added a seventh goal with 6:53 remaining to complete the scoring.

    • Lacroix made two more terrific saves with 2:30 to play, stopping a breakaway chance with his left pad and then using his glove to deny the ensuing attempt off the rebound.

GAME NOTES

    • Lacroix played the final 49:29 of the contest and made a career-high 25 saves in his just his second official collegiate appearance.

    • Lacroix, who started Saturday’s exhibition against Harvard, made his collegiate debut on Feb. 9 against Merrimack, stopping all six shots he faced as part of a 7-1 victory.

    • Amonte scored his first goal since lighting the lamp against Arizona State on Jan. 7, 2022.

    • Lachance has recorded a point in all four games this season and leads the Terriers in both points (6) and assists (5).

UP NEXT

    • BU and North Dakota will conclude this weekend’s series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. ET.
