LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — With heavy rains in the forecast and a Flood Watch in effect for Southern Nevada, NV Energy has issued a warning for potential outages during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

While the utility company says crews are ready to respond quickly and safely, they also warn that outages may last longer than normal.

NV Energy reminds residents to keep their safety at top of mind ahead of the rain:

  • If you encounter a downed power line, do not approach or touch it. Call 911.
  • Avoid standing water, because it may be electrically charged.
  • Do no touch any electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • If someone in your house is on life support, prepare a backup plan.
  • If there is a chance of flash flooding, move immediately to higher ground.
  • Don’t walk or drive through flood water.
  • If you have a portable generator, make sure to review the safety guidelines.
  • If you are experiencing an outage, keep refrigerators and freezers closed to reduce food spoilage.

Crews may also need to access powerlines or equipment on private property to make repairs. NV Energy says you can identify their field employees and contractos by their identification badges.
