NEW YORK CITY (TND) — A man who allegedly warned “Zionist” New York City subway passengers to leave the train turned himself in on Wednesday, according to police.
Anas Saleh earlier this month demanded Israel sympathizers identify themselves before urging them to exit at the Union Square station in Manhattan, the New York City Police Department said.
Raise your hands if you’re a Zionist,” Saleh purportedly shouted. “This is your chance to get out.”
Several other people joined Saleh in his demands, according to footage reviewed by The National Desk (TND). One voice can later be heard saying “okay, no Zionists, we’re good” before cheering began.
The incident took place the same day that Palestine and Israel supporters met at Union Square. Two people held up a banner reading “Long live October 7th” in front of other demonstrators waving Israeli flags, according to separate footage reviewed by TND.
Elsewhere in the city, pro-Palestine protesters shined a red light on the building housing a memorial for people who died during the Nova Music Festival, where Hamas terrorists killed hundreds on Oct. 7. Some waved Palestinian flags and lit flares.
Mayor Eric Adams criticized the protests in a video shared the following day and reminded viewers that Hamas killed innocent people at the festival.
While peaceful protests will be allowed, New York City will never cower in the face of those trying to divide us,” Adams said. “Hate has no place in our city.”
New York City has also seen pro-Palestinian demonstrations at college campuses over the past several months. In April, several protesters broke into and barricaded themselves in a Columbia University academic building to demand the school divest from companies perceived as helping Israel in its war against Hamas.
The incident followed the creation of an encampment on campus where protesters issued similar demands to school leaders. President Joe Biden denounced the break-in at the time.
