PULLMAN, WA – Exploring careers in the tech industry is the topic of the annual Business Technology Symposium, 1–2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, CUB Auditorium, at Washington State University’s Pullman campus. “From WSU to the C-Suite: A Tale of Two CIOs” is a free event and open to the public and all WSU majors. The symposium will be livestreamed on Zoom.

The symposium will feature Jason Stefanski (’98 Mgmt. Info. Sys.), CIO and principle at GeoEngineers, and Joe Guptill (’98 Mgmt. Info. Sys.), CIO at Guimont Capital and CEO and owner of VMS Technology.

Stefanski and Guptill will speak about their individual career experiences and their roles as corporate leaders in the tech industry.

After graduating from WSU, Stefanski worked his way up through the technical ranks at several companies, rounding out his experience in a variety of industries including manufacturing, entertainment, intellectual property, ecommerce, and engineering. At GeoEngineers, Stefanski is responsible for setting the vision, strategy, and direction of technology. This includes managing technology initiatives and being a mentor to several other group leaders.

Over the last 25 years, Guptill held executive roles in the seafood and pharmaceutical industries before becoming CIO of DTG Recycle and the CEO and owner of VMS Technology, a tech solutions company. In 2024, he became the CIO at Guimont Capital, a private commercial lending company. He focuses on creating technology-driven customer solutions that align with the company’s mission to provide flexible funding options.

“This year’s Business Technology Symposium will help educate students across WSU who are interested in leadership careers in the tech industry,” said Robert Crossler, WSU Carson College of Business professor and chair of the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship. “Jason and Joe are inspiring examples of successful WSU business graduates whose leadership skills advance the value of their companies.

The Business Technology Symposium is hosted by the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship within the WSU Carson College of Business and is sponsored by Mike (’85, ’86) and Amy Dreyer (’86) and Steven (’76, ’84) and Cyndie Tarr.
