WASHINGTON — Republican Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno has introduced a bill, known as the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, that would end dual citizenship in the United States.

What You Need To Know

  • Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, is looking to end dual citizenship in the U.S.
  • He has introduced a bill known as the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025
  • It would require U.S. citizens with foreign citizenship to give up one or the other

The bill’s language alleges that a U.S. citizen holding foreign citizenship “may create conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.”

Should this bill pass, it would require a person with U.S. citizenship and that of another country to give up one or the other.

“One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so,” Moreno said in a press release from his office. “It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”
