The event, held at the Pa. State Capitol on Monday, celebrated 182 years since the Dominican Republic gained independence on Feb. 27, 1844.
HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Legislative Latino Caucus hosted an event at the Pa. State Capitol to mark 182 years of Dominican Independence.
With the theme “Roots, Resilience & Results: Dominican Immigrants Powering Pennsylvania,” the event celebrated 182 years since the Dominican Republic gained independence from Spanish colonialism and Haitian control on Feb. 27, 1844.
Three state representatives with Dominican ancestry also introduced a bill to recognize Feb. 27 as Dominican Republic Independence Day in Pennsylvania. They say it’s important to recognize the contributions Dominicans have made in the Commonwealth.
“This is not a celebration. This is a declaration — a declaration that we are still here. Let’s continue powering Pennsylvania together,” said Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Pa. Legislative Latino Caucus chair.
