Residents in Missouri City are used to seeing wildlife in their neighborhood, but this was something they hadn’t seen before.

MISSOURI CITY, Texas — Residents in Missouri City are getting used to a new neighbor.

They live in the Glenn Lakes area of the Quail Valley subdivision, which is near a nature preserve.

They’ve seen all sorts of animals over the years — from deer to alligators — but on Sunday night, they saw something for the first time.

“I looked up and saw the roof and said, ‘That’s a giant limb.’ I thought this huge limb fell on the house because we’ve had some storms lately and I looked up and I said, ‘Wait, that limb’s moving. That’s not a limb, that’s a peacock. Oh, my gosh,” Jeanette Morales said.

Morales said a beautiful Indian peafowl — specifically, a peacock since the bird appears to be male — planted itself on the roof of her mother’s home.

She said the bird’s loud mating calls had awakened her in the morning.

Morales said she called Missouri City Animal Control to report the bird but was told it’s treated like wildlife and unless it appears to be injured, it was best to leave it alone.

Morales said the peacock left Monday morning when the lawn guy showed up, but she hopes it returns.

“I Googled it, like, is this a bad omen? I wasn’t sure what to think about it, but every culture said it was a good sign, a good thing, so that was good. I was, like, oh, well that’s great,” Morales said.

Peafowl are native to India and the exact origin of how they landed in Texas is unclear. Rumor has it that a Houston family owned a 10-acre property and brought them to the area in 1980.
