A $3.4 million BMX-style bicycle course is coming to Pearsall Park with construction expected to start in late 2027.

City officials announced the project is moving forward with city and state funding.

Pearsall Park is a 505-acre park near Lackland Air Force Base, featuring a dog park, soccer fields, green space, disc golf and other amenities. Formerly a landfill, the park was converted into a green space for the South Side in 2017.

San Antonio City Councilman Edward Mungia says it “is finally getting the respect it deserves,” as a premier park in the city.

He added that there’s a substantial biking community in San Antonio, and that people are excited about the new bike track.

The bicycle track will feature slopes, paved surfacing with ADA accessible starting gates and riding challenges such as jumps, rollers and banked curves. The course is designed for BMX, mountain bikes and recumbent bikes.

The track will be roughly 1,150 feet long, featuring eight lanes and spans across three acres.

The project was recently awarded a $1.5 million Local Park Urban Outdoor Grant by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The remaining $1.9 million comes from the City of San Antonio’s 2022 Bond Program.

In 2022, 64% of San Antonio voters approved Proposition C, allocating $272 million for 82 parks, recreation and open space improvement projects.

“We anticipate this track will be a top destination for local cyclists and visitors,” Homer Garcia III, director of San Antonio Parks and Recreation said in a news release.

Mungia says they hope construction will wrap up by late 2028.
