HAVERHILL, Mass. (WKRC/WBZ/CNN Newsource) – People are raising concerns about an overpowering smell coming from a new Dunkin’ Donuts factory in their neighborhood.
“My house smells like doughnuts all the time,” one resident said, adding that the odor has been distracting for the past two months.
The factory, owned by Cafua Management Co., is the largest Dunkin’ bakery in the United States, spanning nearly 100,000 square feet and supplying more than 200 Dunkin’ shops.
A Cafua representative recently appeared before the city council seeking permits to store large quantities of shortening oil and diesel fuel.
The representative said the facility produces about 1 million doughnuts a day, uses new machinery and complies with all regulatory standards.
Despite those assurances, a city council member said some residents are concerned about air quality near the plant. Health inspectors are expected to evaluate the facility, and the council plans to revisit the issue at its January meeting.
