PEORIA, Ill. – A showcase of Hispanic culture along the Peoria Riverfront will not be happening this year.
25 News reports that the Peoria Park District has canceled Fiesta en El Rio over concerns from local organizations about nationwide mass deportations from the Trump administration.
Park District President-At-Large Robert Johnson says he wants to ensure the safety of others.
“Our job is to create an environment for all people in this community to come and recreate and enjoy and attend some of the events that we put on, and be safe,” Johnson said.
Johnson says he is uncertain if organizers will try and run Fiesta en El Rio next year.
