Plans are underway to build a new library in the southwest Valley. And the public will get a chance to name the new building.
The Phoenix Public Library system has a long-standing history of naming most of its 16 branches after native Sonoran Desert plants — think Cholla, Agave and Ironwood.
Lee Franklin is the Community Relations Director for the Phoenix Public Library.
“We do have a long history and tradition of asking for public input and public involvement in selecting a final name for our new library locations as they come on board,” she said, “which we’re getting ready to do with our library that’s going to be at the Estrella Civic Space.”
Franklin said they’ve selected a design firm for the new location along Lower Buckeye Rd, between 91st and 99th avenues. Now they need a name, and they want the public to have a say.
The name options for this particular library are: Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita and Senita.
Franklin says the public can cast a vote for their favorite online through Oct. 2. The winning name will then go to the city for final approval.
