Sydney Parrish on Indiana women’s basketball means to her after March Madness

Sydney Parrish left a legacy after returning to the Hoosiers in the transfer portal.

  • The Hoosiers have landed two players in the transfer portal as Teri Moren’s roster retool continues.

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women’s basketball has landed a commitment from Arkansas guard Phoenix Stotijn.

She reportedly had a list of five finalists that included Arizona State, Clemson, Illinois and Michigan. Stotijn is the second player the Hoosiers have landed out of the transfer portal as they look to rebuild a roster with only one returning starter, Shay Ciezki.

Stotijn 7.2 points and 2.2 assists per game as a true freshman in 21 games. She started the team’s final 11 games last season and averaged 29.6 minutes per game during that stretch. She’s the second guard to commit to IU out of the transfer portal.

“Go Hoosiers,” Stotijn wrote on social media.

Insider: Why Chloe Spreen is coming home to IU women’s basketball: ‘It’s where my heart wanted to be’

Teri Moren and her staff have plenty of work to do in filling a roster. A half-dozen players entered the transfer portal and another three graduated. But there are two Indiana Ms. Basketball winners pledged to play in Bloomington.

The 2025 winner, Hamilton Southeastern’s Maya Makalusky, and the 2024 winner, Bedford North Lawrence’s Chloe Spreen, are expected to wear cream and crimson. Spreen chose the Hoosiers mid-week after a freshman season at Alabama that saw her minutes diminish down the stretch of the season. Part of Makalusky’s freshman class included Miss Show-Me Basketball Nevaeh Caffey out of Missouri.

It gives the Hoosiers a backcourt to work with experience in Ciezki and Stotijn, then Caffey and Spreen off the bench. Makalusky, a 6-foot-3 forward, will help fortify a frontcourt in need of an overhaul.

Of course, IU has plenty to replace with Chloe Moore-McNeil, Sydney Parrish and Karoline Striplin graduating. Then do-everything guard Yarden Garzon entered the transfer portal after the season.
