The Phoenix Zoo is inviting families to celebrate life and remembrance during its inaugural Día de los Muertos event, set for Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1–2. The weekend celebration will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a Día de los Muertos art sale open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Guests can explore vibrant altars, enjoy cultural performances, and participate in family-friendly activities inspired by the Mexican holiday honoring loved ones who have passed. Children can create crowns and paper marigolds, color sugar skulls, take part in face painting and more.
The Zoo will host its first altar contest, featuring designs from local artists and community partners. Each altar, positioned along different trails, will celebrate life while respectfully embracing the traditions of Día de los Muertos.
Cultural performances include Ballet Folklorico Amistad and Ollin Yolitzli Dance Academy on both days, with Ballet Folklorico del Valle Del Sol performing Sunday. Attendees can also enjoy skeleton puppets, storytelling acts, and community processions.
Live music will feature mariachis, Cumbia Oaxaca, and sets from local radio station partners, while local vendors provide food and refreshments.
A centerpiece of the weekend is the Arte Para Los Muertos art sale, showcasing paintings, sculptures and masks inspired by the holiday. Local collector Joe Raymond donated the pieces. All proceeds will benefit the Zoo’s conservation and stewardship programs, supporting wildlife and their habitats while offering experiences that encourage visitors to connect with and care for the natural world. The sale takes place just outside the Zoo entrance and is open to the public.
Admission to the Día de los Muertos festivities is included with general Zoo admission. The Phoenix Zoo is located at 455 N. Galvin Parkway.
