ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Police are investigating after four people were shot at a mall off Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday, including the suspect.

Police said the shooting happened at 235 Peachtree Street around 2:15 p.m. This area is surrounded by businesses, restaurants and hotels.

The incident happened in the Peachtree Center mall’s food court after a fight between two people, according to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. The building was on lockdown.

The suspected shooter, later identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Malone from Morrow, allegedly got into a fight with a 47-year-old man in the food court and shot him, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Atlanta police. Officials say Morrow continued to walk through the court, shooting a 69-year-old woman from East Point and a 70-year-old woman from Atlanta.

That’s when an off-duty police officer intervened and shot the suspect, according to police.

All of those with gunshot wounds were taken to local hospitals and are expected to survive. Malone is now in police custody.

During a news conference, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the suspect who opened fire was a convicted felon who had been arrested nearly a dozen times.

Malone faces five charges — aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, and third-degree cruelty to children, Fulton County Jail records show.

Because the incident was an officer-involved shooting, the GBI is handling the investigation.
