A new poll from the Pew Research Center shows that President Donald Trump is losing support among Hispanic voters as well as the wider Hispanic community, with 70% disapproving of his performance.

In the 2024 election, 42% of Latinos voted for President Trump, which was 10% more than in the 2020 election. While those Hispanic voters who voted for President Trump in the 2024 election remain optimistic about the President’s performance, with 81% still approving, this number is down from previous polling of 93%.

Dr. Edward Vargas, Associate Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Transborder Studies, and Stella Rouse, director of the ASU Hispanic Research Center and professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies, joined “Horizonte” to discuss why President Trump is so unpopular with Hispanics and why they think this shift occurred.

“The people who have sort of shifted towards Trump in the last election were either first-time voters or people who were kind of independent,” Dr. Vargas said. “The story of economic security really attracted them to a Trump Administration and made them feel either deceived or this hasn’t gotten better or, in fact, maybe that their lives have gotten worse since the election.”

This sentiment could be noticed even after the Trump Administration’s first 100 days due to rising inflation, interest rates stagnating and the rise of deportations, according to Dr. Vargas.

“There’s the economic piece and then there’s also the social aspects of the deportations and people feeling like their communities are under attack,” Dr. Vargas said.

Approximately 65% of all Hispanics disapprove of President Trump’s approach to immigration, according to the Pew Research Center.

“There’s a lot of buyers remorse among Latinos,” Rouse said. “The identity picture of it is complex and multifaceted in many ways. There are a lot of Latinos that don’t have a [direct] connection to immigration per say but certainly the way that President Trump has tackled immigration, I think, has hit a nerve with Latinos.”
