While the flames smoldered out at San Antonio’s beloved The Barn Door Restaurant & Meat Market over the weekend, another beloved San Antonio business intends to bring the sizzle back to 8400 N. New Braunfels Ave.
Details are slim, but staffers at popular Mexican restaurant Soluna Cocina Mexicana have been instructed to inform inquiring minds that the restaurant will relocate to the former Barn Door site in 2028. Soluna debuted in 2003 as an addition to the Mamita’s Cuisine restaurant group, which also includes El Mirasol and La Fogata.
Over the past two decades, Soluna has become a popular Alamo Heights-area gathering spot known for its lineup of chispas — essentially margaritas made light and refreshing through the use of fresh ingredients instead of commercial bottled mixes. Those drinks caught the attention of Express-News dining critic Mike Sutter, who placed Soluna on his list of Top 10 Margaritas in San Antonio last year.
The Barn Door stunned longtime fans in late April with news it would close after 73 years following service this past Mother’s Day. Loyal fans quickly flocked to the restaurant in its final days, leading The Barn Door to shut down reservations for those final few steaks.
“We are so overwhelmed with the love and amount of support we have received,” The Barn Door said in a Facebook post. “Thank you for everything, San Antonio!”
