For the second straight game, the New York Rangers have defeated the Florida Panthers in overtime. This time, Alexander Wennberg came up clutch for the Rangers in a 5-4 win that gave his team a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Final.
Just 5:33 into the overtime period, the Rangers won an offensive zone face-off, and Ryan Lindgren fired a shot from the point. On its way to the net, the puck kicked off the glove of Wennberg and deflected past Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to win the game.
After two periods, it looked like the Rangers might be able to notch a comfortable Game 3 win. They were up 4-2, and they were 40-0-1 when scoring four or more goals in a game this season.
However, the Panthers came out with a strong push in the third period and tied the game on goals from Aleksander Barkov and Gustav Forsling. Even after leveling the score at 4-4, Florida continued to push and fired one scoring chance after another on Igor Shesterkin, who stood tall in the Rangers’ crease and got the game to overtime.
This was another huge outing for Barclay Goodroow and Vincent Trocheck. Goodrow scored two more goals, bringing his playoff total to six after tallying just four in 80 regular season games.
Trocheck notched a pair of assists for his eighth multi-point game in these playoffs. That is second all-time in Rangers history, behind only the legendary Brian Leetch, who had nine multi-point games in the team’s 1994 Stanley Cup run.
