The organizers of Georgia’s largest Fourth of July parade are looking to fill some low-key volunteer positions on the parade route.
The jobs will not require walking long distances or showing up hours before the event.
“What we need are people who are sitting along the route with their kids, friends and families to help reduce the number of gaps in the parade,” said parade co-organizer Matt Weber. “We will give you a t-shirt, and if you see a gap from from where you are sitting, you would just encourage the group to either hurry up or slow down.”
The parade, with more than 71 registrants, is ahead of schedule for this time of year, organizers report.
“I think this has the potential to be the biggest parade we’ve ever had,” Weber said.
Weber said he believes that interest in the event has spiked in response to the enthusiastic participation last year, despite a drenching downpour that soaked spectators and participants.
“I hate to put a hashtag on everything, but I think #Dunwoodystayed is a perfect metaphor for what happened when it poured after the last entry left from All Saints Church,” Weber said. “Nobody backed out.”
Four bands have already committed to performing this year – the Spirit of Atlanta, Atlanta CV Drum & Bugle Corp, Dunwoody High School, and the return of the ever-popular 116thArmy band, which will perform during and after the conclusion of the parade.
Also joining the ranks of participants are the Weinermobile, DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond, Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, the Dunwoody Precision Lawn Chair Group, Twilight Twirlers, and WSB-TV News Anchor Sophia Choi.
Dash Hospitality’s David Abes will be the grand marshal at this year’s Fourth of July Parade.
Abes is the driving force behind an effort to create a multi-use entertainment and restaurant complex in the heart of Dunwoody that now includes Bar(n), Message in a Bottle, Morty’s Meat Supply and several food truck concepts.
This year’s parade theme is “Red, White, and You.” The parade is the largest in the state of Georgia, with more than 2,000 participants and 30,000 spectators. The Dunwoody Homeowners Association and Rough Draft are presenting sponsors.
