If you haven’t received your New York inflation refund check, keep watching your mail.

The state began sending out the checks to over 8 million people in September. The Tax Department said then it would take weeks for all of the checks to go out.

The department doesn’t have exact details on when individual checks will be sent. It’s advising New Yorkers to watch their mail for them.

New Yorkers don’t have to do anything to get the checks. No sign-ups, registrations or applications are required.

The state is sending the checks based on information it already had on file from the 2023 tax year.

The state Legislature approved the checks as part of the budget earlier this year. Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed them as a way to help New Yorkers deal with rising prices.

You’ll get a check if you filed form IT-201, the New York State Resident Income Tax Return, for the 2023 tax year, had income within qualifying thresholds and weren’t claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s return.

The check amounts are determined by income and filing status, according to the Tax Department. Here’s how they break down:

  • Single filers: $200 for those with income of $75,000 or less and $150 for those with income of more than $75,000, but not more than $150,000.
  • Married filing jointly: $400 for those with income of $150,000 or less and $300 for those with income of more than $150,000, but not more than $300,000.
  • Married filing separately: $200 for those with income of $75,000 or less and $150 for those with income of more than $75,000, but not more than $150,000.
  • Head of household: $200 for those with income of $75,000 or less and $150 for those with income of more than $75,000, but not more than $150,000.
  • Qualifying surviving spouse: $400 for those with income of $150,000 or less and $300 for those with income of more than $150,000, but not more than $300,000.

Scammers have been targeting New Yorkers using the checks as an avenue to get sensitive information. The checks aren’t subject to state taxes, but should be reported on federal returns.
