The news the entire New York Islanders and hockey world had been waiting on has finally come. The New York Islanders will trade Brock Nelson. No destination or further information is yet known.

Nelson’s Legacy:
Nelson is an all-time Islander, having played the fourth-most games ever for the franchise. He led the team in goals during the 2020 and 2021 playoff runs. He has the fifth-most goals in franchise history. He has the eighth-most points in the franchise history. He became the first American to represent the Islanders at a best-on-best tournament since the 2006 Olympics.
Nelson’s accolades can go on forever. Named an All-Star in the 2022-23 season, he became a major force on the team after John Tavares’s departure. Nelson’s biggest moments include his clutch game six performances in 2021, with three points against the Pittsburgh Penguins and then the series-winning goal against the Boston Bruins after that. Nelson then scored the first-ever Islanders goal in UBS Arena.

Once he retires, he will likely be inducted into the Islanders Hall of Fame. His name is etched into Islanders history, bringing the franchise from the all-time low with Tavares’ departure to within one game of the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1984.
What It Means for the Islanders:
For this year’s Islanders, it signals the end of an era. If Nelson is exiting, so too is Kyle Palmieri. The two goal leaders from the 2021 run will depart, leaving sizable roles for Simon Holmstrom and Maxim Tsyplakov to fill, depending on potential returns.
It signals a change in the core group, with Nelson vacating his spot as an alternate captain. If healthy, Mathew Barzal would unquestionably pick up the letter. Instead, one of Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, or Casey Cizikas will presumably wear an “A” for the rest of the season.
