Klein Smokehaus owners Clayton Klein and Colton Sells produce their bacon at their historic Hill Country facility, which opened in 1950.

Landing a spot on grocer H-E-B’s shelves is like winning the Super Bowl for many Texas entrepreneurs — and now a pair of Boerne business partners are closer than ever.

San Antonio-based H-E-B this week named Klein Smokehaus Bacon a top 10 finalist in the corporation’s 12th Annual Quest for Texas Best contest. The event pits Texas food companies against each other, and the winner gets marketing assistance, supplemental support and mentoring along with coveted shelf space with the beloved supermarket chain.

The bacon rose to the finals from a pool of more than 370 entries representing nearly 150 Lone Star State cities. The contest’s grand-prize winner will receive $50,000 and placement on H-E-B shelves. Second, third and fourth place winners will take home $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.

Klein Smokehaus owners Clayton Klein and Colton Sells produce the bacon at their historic Hill Country facility, which first opened in 1950. The slow-processed meat, smoked over Texas oak, is the only San Antonio-area product to reach the finals this year.

Both proud Aggies, Klein and Sells celebrated the news on Klein Smokehaus’ social media channels, writing that they were “honest to goodness elated” to make it to the top 10.

“It’s dang good bacon, y’all, made the old-world way, deep in the heart of Texas,” the post read.

The contest’s final round will take place in September at H-E-B’s headquarters, where all 10 finalists will pitch their products to a panel of judges.
