SAN ANTONIO – Local leaders celebrated the opening of a new $3.5 million affordable housing complex on the Northeast Side on Wednesday.

The City of San Antonio, through its Neighborhood and Housing Services Department (NHSD), provided the funding for Village at the Loop through the HOME Investments Partnership Program and the Northeast Corridor TIRZ.

“San Antonio has become too unaffordable for the average person working here,” said Bexar County Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert. “If you look at the rent structure, if you look at the mortgage, average new home price, I mean, how does a family afford $350,000 house nowadays?”

The new development features 92 one-, two- and three-bedroom units equipped with energy-efficient appliances. Residents have access to shared spaces including a community room, business center, fitness room, playground and swimming pool.

“This project reflects what happens when the city, developers, service providers and neighbors come together with a shared vision,” said NHSD Director Veronica Garcia. “Village at the Loop reflects a simple truth: Affordable housing opens doors to safety, to opportunity, to connection, to community.”

The project represents a long-term community effort, according to Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai.

“This started five years ago and went through a lot of difficulties, so I’m very proud that as a community we stayed focused in order to provide for the people that need this type of housing,” Sakai said.

Prospera Housing and Community Services, which manages over 50 properties and serves 10,300 community members, will provide extensive on-site programming.

Property Manager Yadira Garcés brings personal experience to her role at the new complex.

“I’m a single mom myself,” Garcés said. “I had my three kids being alone, not knowing that I had that type of assistance out there. It kind of made me just work harder, spend less time with my kids because I had to get that double job.”

The complex is designed to serve households at 60% of the area median income. Through Housing Base, an online platform by NHSD, residents can search for affordable rental properties in their community.

Prosper, another housing organization in San Antonio, currently manages approximately 20 communities in the area with more in development.

“If I can’t find a place for you here, I am going to reach out and find you something,” Garcés said.

The Village at the Loop serves residents of various age groups, with each finding security in their new home environment.

“Knowing that we can do that, it just makes it so much more fulfilling,” Garcés said. “Knowing that we were able to be their milestone of getting to where they want with that home.”
