Anticipation is building for the opening of San Antonio’s first-ever Pan-Asia Supermarket, a grocery store spanning more than 60,000 square feet. Construction began over the summer, but some social media users say it doesn’t appear ready for its early 2027 debut.
The shop is slowly taking shape at 3713 Colony Drive, about one mile from the USAA Headquarters. During MySA’s visit to the site on Thursday, October 8, we saw construction crews operating machinery inside the building, though the interior mainly appeared empty, aside from building materials.
Founded in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2010, the chain offers an assortment of Asian vegetables, fruits, seafood and meat. The company previously told MySA that the Alamo City spot will also feature a food court with “various fresh-made bakery, sushi, [and a] boba tea shop” alongside the typical produce, candy and home items.
Some residents were curious whether the progress could push back the first operational day, which was tentatively scheduled for spring 2027.
“Does anyone know what’s happening with the PanAsia supermarket off Wurzbach near I-10?” one Reddit user asked. “They put the sign up…well, most of it. It’s missing an ‘A.’ For many weeks, it’s been just ‘Pan Asi.’ Did the project hit a snag?”
In a Wednesday, September 30, email statement, a Pan Asia Supermarket spokesperson told MySA they could not confirm a grand opening date but that staff “are aiming to open before the summer of 2027.” A month earlier, they told us, “Unfortunately, our construction has been delayed.”
It’s no small task. Building crews are dismantling and remodeling three existing retail tenants to create the food hub. Work at the property, located within the Colonies North Shopping Center, is expected to continue through Friday, December 18, according to an online state filing. It will cost project leaders roughly $1.7 million to bring their vision to life.
When asked what drew the company to San Antonio, a company spokesperson said it was the city’s “vibrant, diverse community and a growing demand for authentic international flavors.” They added, “We chose this specific location to better serve the city’s residents with a large-scale, high-quality shopping experience that was previously missing in this part of the market.”
Seven locations currently operate in the U.S. Two more, including the San Antonio location, are underway.
