San Francisco is 20-29 and 10 games back of first place, with a 10-17 road record. This is the first series of the season between these division foes. The Diamondbacks dominated the opener, 12-2, and then came back to win the series on Tuesday on a huge 5-3 walk-off victory. The Diamondbacks will try to do that by starting Merrill Kelly, who is 3-3 with a 5.91 ERA in 35 innings. The Giants will counter with Tyler Mahle, who is 1-5 with a 5.59 ERA in 46.2 innings. Expect another high-scoring game, especially at Chase Field in Phoenix.
The Diamondbacks came back down to earth a bit in Game 2, but the results were the same, as Arizona won the series on Tuesday. That was all in big thanks to Ketel Marte, who hit a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Arizona scored in the first inning on an RBI triple by Corbin Caroll. The Diamondbacks couldn’t score again until they put up four runs, highlighted by Marte’s heroics. The rally started with an RBI single to center by Adrian Del Castillo. San Francisco looked primed to win after it scored all three of its runs in the second inning, highlighted by solo shots from Rafael Devers and Willy Adames.
San Francisco had a 96.5 percent chance in the ninth inning to tie this series. It was a devastating loss and erased a good start from Giants starter Landen Roupp, who went six innings while only giving up one run on seven hits.
