The Federal Aviation Administration is giving the San Antonio International Airport a $13.3 million Airport Infrastructure Grant to aid the airport’s major expansion already underway.

SAT’s $2.5 billion expansion is currently in Phase 4 of construction, which includes excavation; drilled piers; mechanical, electrical and plumbing work; and baggage-handling systems.

The expansion will add 17 new domestic and international gates and about 850,000 square feet of terminal space. The grant, which came from a 2021 federal law funding transit infrastructure like airports, will add to SAT’s capital improvement funding and passenger revenue.

“It strengthens our airport infrastructure, creates local jobs and ensures that SAT will continue to meet the growing needs of our city,” San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh said.

The project aims to create 16,000 jobs in San Antonio, ranging from engineering to customer service and inject $2.8 billion to the local economy, according to a press release about the grant.

“We are grateful to the FAA  for their continued partnership and commitment to improving our airport infrastructure,” said Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the City of San Antonio.
