The Denver Broncos made a surprising decision on Wednesday when they released veteran safety Taylor Rapp less than a week after signing him.

Broncos coach Sean Payton explained the situation after Wednesday’s practice.

“Taylor Rapp came in, spent some time with him — he needs a little time at home and [we] completely get what he’s needing,” Payton said. “There’s a good chance, better than good chance — I know how he felt being here. So, sooner than later, that’s going to happen. This, obviously, took precedence.”

Rapp practiced Monday, did not practice Tuesday and was officially cut on Wednesday. Despite the small in-person sample size, the Broncos know what the safety can add to a defense.

“Here’s what we know: we’ve played against him; he’s smart, which is a great trait to have as a safety,” Payton said. “He’s a good tackler. He can play down over the slot; he’s got versatility. This came up and it was something that obviously he needed to address.”

The Broncos have made it clear that they like Rapp, and Payton indicated the safety was happy with the team. So once his personal situation is resolved, Rapp will likely return to Denver’s roster.
