MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – It was a second-half masterclass for the West Virginia University men’s soccer team on Friday night as the Mountaineers defeated Denver, 5-0, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, scoring all five goals after the break. WVU improves to 3-1-1 while the Pioneers fall to 1-5-1.
Wearing their Coal Rush uniforms for the first time, the Mountaineers got two goals from senior Pablo Pozos and one each from sophomore Sammie Walker, sophomore Juan Alvarez, and redshirt freshman Brayden Macomber. Pozos also added two assists on the night as did junior Isaac Scheer while junior Civan de Jesus Ferreira tallied a helper as well.
Redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer only needed to make two saves in goal to secure his second clean sheet of the season.
WVU outshot Denver, 26-5, and had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal while also taking nine corner kicks and conceding none. It was just the second time in the last 11 seasons the Mountaineers have taken at least 26 shots in a match.
The Mountaineers had a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half but could not find the back of the net. Coming out of the locker room, it did not take long to break through, however, as Walker was in the right place at the right time for a tap-in goal in the 54th minute off a corner kick.
With just 15 minutes to go in the game, WVU still held on to a skinny one-goal lead before putting up three goals in the next four minutes. Pozos started the barrage as he took a pass from Scheer and slotted it past the keeper. The play started when de Jesus Ferreira, a center-back, dribbled the ball up the field for about 40 yards before leaving it off for Scheer.
In the 77th minute, Pozos found Alvarez to his left, who scored his first goal of the season while sliding to the ground. Just a minute later, Scheer delivered a beautiful back-heel pass to Pozos in the box where the Spaniard did the rest. It was Pozos’ fourth multiple-goal game for the Mountaineers after having three such games in 2025.
After entering for the first time in his career in the 79th minute, Macomber took his first shot in the 86th minute. The ball deflected off a Denver defender’s head before finding the open corner of the net.
West Virginia will be back on the pitch on September 17, against Georgia State to open Sun Belt action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
