West Virginia guard Javon Small is one of 10 selections on the All-Big 12 Conference first team, as announced Monday by the league.
In his first year with the Mountaineers and last college basketball campaign, Small tied UCF’s Keyshawn Hall as the Big 12’s leading scorer with an average of 18.5 points.
He was WVU’s lone double-figure scorer this season with the exception of Tucker DeVries, who played the first eight games and never again.
The 6-foot-3 Small is third in the Big 12 with 5.6 assists in overage and ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.1 His 79 three-pointers rank fourth in the Big 12, while Small is third in the league in free-throw percentage at 88.1, having made 141-of-160 attempts.
Small logged the most minutes of any Big 12 player (1121) and was second in the league in minutes per game at 36.2. His 49 steals are second on WVU and 12th among all Big 12 players. Small, who scored 20 or more points in 13 contests, also averages 4.2 rebounds.
Texas Tech’s JT Toppin garnered Player of the Year, an award Small was thought to heavily be in the running for.
Also named the league’s Newcomer of the Year, Toppin is third in the conference in coring at 18.1 points, as well as third in rebounding at 9.3.
Additionally, the 6-9 forward ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 in field-goal percentage at 55.8 and 12th with 1.2 blocks on average as he was instrumental in helping the Red Raiders finish second in the Big 12 at 15-5.
While Small is the lone Mountaineer across three all-conference teams and 14 honorable mention picks, fellow WVU guard Sencire Harris is a first-team all-defense honoree — one of five players to earn that distinction.
Harris has a team-high 51 steals and was a consistent pest to the opposition through his ability to stay in front of ball-handlers.
He also came up with 22 blocked shots and an average of 4.3 rebounds, good for second among WVU regulars.
Houston’s Kelvin Sampson is Big 12 Coach of the Year having helped guide the Cougars to a 19-1 record in league play and a 27-4 overall mark that will likely land the Cougars one of four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
