To end last week, Santa Maria High School’s AP Spanish students hosted their second annual lunchtime celebration in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Oct. 9 event transformed the campus band shelter into a colorful gathering space celebrating the richness, diversity, and lasting impact of Hispanic culture.
More than 250 students and staff attended the celebration, which featured a variety of educational, cultural, and hands-on activities designed and organized by students.
“During Hispanic Heritage Month, our students explored the contributions, leaders, and cultures that enrich our country,” said Ms. Luna, a Spanish Teacher at Santa Maria High School. “Bringing that learning to life through our annual Festival de la Herencia Hispana was truly special. Seeing students come together, celebrate, and enjoy one another’s cultures was simply magical.”
Demonstrating leadership, creativity, and teamwork, AP Spanish students created interactive stations featuring face painting, cultural trivia, and informational exhibits highlighting the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latin American communities.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s celebration provided students and staff with an opportunity to learn about and celebrate Hispanic heritage while promoting cultural awareness, inclusion, and school spirit.
The Associated Student Body also supported the event by providing aguas frescas for attendees to enjoy.
SMHS student Yadira Morales Montar emphasized the importance of continuing events like this, stating, “It is important to do more celebrations like this since it helps people come together, have fun, and learn more about their culture.”
The event highlighted the dedication of AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature students, who worked together to create an engaging experience that encouraged cultural appreciation and community involvement.
“The success of Santa Maria High School’s second annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration reflects the school’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and providing meaningful opportunities for student leadership,” according to Saint Spanish teacher Margarito Frias.
