PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite doubling Providence in hits, the Boston University softball team dropped a 3-2 decision at Glay Field Wednesday afternoon.
Using three different pitchers, the Friars (12-20) overcame a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh with three runs off three hits, a walk and an error to snap the Terriers’ (22-11) 10-game win streak. Junior Kasey Ricard (14-7) pitched six scoreless innings while allowing one hit before the seventh and and finished with a strikeout against four walks allowed.
Junior Megan Coyle and sophomore Kylie Doherty combined for four of BU’s eight hits with Coyle plating a run in the first and third inning while facing two outs. Providence’s Emma Douma delivered her lone hit of the day in the seventh with a two-RBI double, and Rachael Petrarca earned the walk-off RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Doherty started off the game with a lead-off double and then scored on Coyle’s two-RBI double down the left field line.
- BU had two runners on the corners thanks to sophomore Libby Walsh’s walk, but Providence ended the threat on an infield ground out.
- The Friars earned their lone hit through the first six innings in the bottom of the second but then fouled out into a double play.
- In the third, BU junior Brooke Deppiesse singled to left, stole second and scored on Coyle’s two-out RBI single up the middle.
- The Terriers nearly added a third run in the fourth on junior Olivia DeLong’s single to the outfield but the Friars managed to get the ball home in time for the tag out on freshman Camryn Lyons, who had earlier reached base via walk.
- Providence threatened in the fifth with a pair of walks before Ricard kept the Friars off the scoreboard with an infield pop up.
- Trying to add more runs, Doherty singled up the middle in the top of the seventh and advanced to second on freshman Kieren McHugh’s single, but Jessica Walter entered in relief to earn a fly out to center.
- Providence started the bottom half with an infield single and walk on 3-2 pitches before adding a two-out RBI double that with the help of an outfield error that allowed Douma to reach third with zero outs.
- Ricard then earned an infield pop up for the first out, but Petrarca delivered the walk-off victory on an RBI single through the left side two weeks after the Friars defeated Boston College, 7-4, at home.

- BU will head to Holy Cross for the Turnpike Trophy series with Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game set for a 12 p.m. start time.
- Last season, the Terriers swept the series at home by a combined score of 27-0 after defeating the Crusaders on the road in 2023 by a combined score of 26-1.
