South Bend Mayor James Mueller discusses Memo’s Mexican Grill
Memo’s Mexican Grill is one of a handful of restaurants that have recently opened on Western Avenue in South Bend.
SOUTH BEND — A new grocery store, restaurant and bakery, Memo’s Mexican Grill, opened at 2712 W. Western Ave. earlier this year.
The owners, Gabriela Cruz and Guillermo Carrillo, started the business with a food truck, which they’ve parked on Western Avenue, Main Street and at other various locations throughout the city.
“I’m really thankful that we have a lot of people that support us, and we’re so bless to continue,” Cruz said.
Memo’s menu consists of an array of traditional Mexican food, including tacos and quesabirrias, as well as American classics, such as hamburgers and hotdogs. Inside the establishment, customers can find household items, fresh produce and imported snacks from different Latin American countries.
St. Joseph County Latin American Chamber of Commerce President Paula Sours has enjoyed watching local Latin businesses flourish and grow on Western Avenue, she said, with Memo’s Mexican Grill being one of them.
“It brings awareness for this area. … When you live on different sides of the city, you don’t know what’s over there,” Sours said at a ribbon cutting Sept. 2. “It’s a blessing because I know that they’re [the Latino community] is experiencing right now a lot of stuff, but yet, they put it aside, and they’re standing up. They’re doing what they have been called to do.”
As Western Avenue continues to grow and expand, South Bend Mayor James Mueller said, the pop up of new businesses, such as Memo’s, is bringing renewed energy to the neighborhood.
“The community is what we make of it,” Mueller said. “When members of the community step forward and invest, not just their money but also their time and efforts, that’s how we make a vibrant community, and that’s how we rebuild our neighborhood.”
