SAN ANTONIO – A project at Texas A&M San Antonio aims to connect more students struggling with mental illness to much-needed resources.
The South Bexar County Mental Health Project launched in October.
Since then, the program has trained more than 150 teachers and education personnel on ways to recognize and respond to symptoms of mental health.
“This is really crucial,” said Dr. Christine Gonzales-Wong, Assistant Professor of Counseling at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. “Because the research shows that the earlier you intervene when someone is having a mental health challenge, the better their lifelong outcomes.”
The project aims to train 945 individuals as mental health first-aiders over three years.
