The Boston Bruins have a surplus of left-shot defenders which is causing some trade interest from around the NHL.

The Boston Bruins are coming off a successful 2025-26 campaign. The Bruins returned to the playoffs last season after missing out in 2024-25. The Bruins have been to the Stanley Cup playoffs nine of the last ten seasons, but have not made it to the conference finals since 2019. They lost to the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Final that year.

As the Bruins are set to open up their 2026-27 campaign on September 29, they could be looking to make some changes to their roster, and one blueliner is drawing interest from other teams in the league, according to James Murphy of RG.

“With their surplus of left-shot D, lots of teams are looking at them and wondering who will be the odd man or men out,” an NHL executive said.

The Bruins are not actively shopping him currently, but Mason Lohrei was floated in a potential trade for Rasmus Anderson last season.

“I keep hearing Mason Lohrei as a guy that’s still out there and someone they’d still consider moving,” another NHL executive told RG last week.

The 25-year-old left-handed blueliner was the 58th selection of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Bruins. He would break into the NHL in 2023-24, playing 41 games with the NHL club that year and 11 games in the playoffs. Lohrei played in 77 games in 2024-25, setting career highs in both assists and points. He took a small step back last season, finding the back of the net seven times, but with just 19 assists and only 26 points.

The Bruins open the season against the New York Rangers as part of an opening night triple-header.
