EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Former All Elite Wrestling (AEW) women’s champion Thunder Rosa brings Hispanic culture to the ring as AEW returns to El Paso on Wednesday.
Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico– but now living in San Antonio– Thunder Rosa has become a formidable force in the wrestling world, known for her dynamic performances and cultural representation.
“My name is Thunder Rosa,” she said. “Thunder Rosa comes from a place where I used to work. Well, ‘Thunder Road,’ it was a rehab facility where I worked with kids between the 13 and 18, and I always remember them, especially the ones that didn’t make it when I get in the ring.”
Thunder Rosa has been wrestling for 11 years and is recognized for her unique character, which incorporates elements of her Hispanic heritage.
Her face paint, reminiscent of Día de los Muertos, pays homage to her family’s history and her cultural roots.
Thunder Rosa said that her grandfather suffered a heart attack and died while he was with his children watching a lucha libre live show.
“It’s to represent those who passed away and to bring hope for those who are still here, but they can’t see the light,” she said.
