Tom Thumb plans to close a store in North Texas.
The grocer, part of Albertsons, is set to close its store in Allen at 900 W. McDermott Drive, according to a letter that was provided by the Texas Workforce Commission. The move will affect 75 associates at the store.
The shuttering is set to close to the public on or before July 5, according to Albertsons Cos. southern division in an emailed statement.
“Based on the timing of the lease renewal for this location and the proximity of nearby company stores, the difficult decision was made to close this location,” the statement said. “In such a competitive environment, our company must sometimes make the tough decision to close an underperforming store so that we can reinvest in our remaining stores in the marketplace.”
The company is working to place all associates in nearby locations and remains committed to the Dallas-Fort Worth market where “significant investments continue including store remodels and new store openings,” the North Texas market, the statement said.
The closure comes as other companies in the region expand operations, including H-E-B and Sprouts Farmers Market. Grocers have been investing in the region amid population growth and a dynamic business environment.
Albertsons and larger rival Kroger had been set to merge until the two companies late last year terminated the deal in December after the U.S. District Court in Oregon and the King County Superior Court for the State of Washington blocked the tie-up.
Within days, locals learned that Tom Thumb pulled back on a planned store for the Red Bird area in Dallas that had been set to open sometime this year.
Still, the company opened three Tom Thumb stores in 2024 and broke ground on three additional new sites to open in 2025 and 2026, the statement said.
“We invite customers to shop at our remaining 67 Tom Thumb locations throughout DFW, including 13 in Collin County, and our 35 Albertsons locations throughout North Texas,” the statement said.
Pharmacy prescriptions will be transferred to the Tom Thumb at 7801 Alma Dr. in Plano.
