Take a stroll through the first piece of Dallas’ newest deck park, set to open in early May, and you’ll find elements of Oak Cliff sprinkled throughout the 5-acre green space that seeks to bring fresh connectivity and economic activity to the neighborhood south of downtown.
The unique characteristics of the community can be found in Halperin Park’s blackland prairie and pollinator-friendly landscaping. The children’s area taps into a treehouse-in-the-woods aesthetic with its soft clay play structures, a small nod to the neighborhood’s creeks and streams.
The escarpment feature along the park’s ramp calls attention to the area’s limestone underpinning and the multi-leveled vantage points provide beautiful views of the surroundings.
Given the Southern Gateway Public Green Foundation’s mission to reconnect the neighborhood and deliver Klyde Warren Park-level connectivity to Oak Cliff residents, it made sense the organization built the deck park using the community as its inspiration. CEO April Allen took the Dallas Business Journal on a tour of the park development ahead of its May 9 opening, highlighting many of these features.
