The city is advising residents to stock up on food amid a tropical storm warning in Southeast Harris County that encompasses parts of Houston.
The tropical storm warning applies to areas close to the south and east of Houston, in addition to hurricane and tropical storm warnings in surrounding counties. Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to make landfall nearly 100 miles southwest of the city between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay early Monday.
Beryl will likely bring heavy rainfall, flooding, wind and potentially tornadoes to the Houston area in coming days. The worst weather is expected to occur between late Sunday and early Tuesday, although officials do not expect to put out evacuation notices for the storm, said City of Houston Office of Emergency Management spokesperson Brent Taylor. A map of hurricane evacuation zones is available online.
The release asked residents to stock up on supplies, including prescription medication, for five to seven days as a precaution and to develop a family communication plan.
Residents are also asked to learn how to shut off their utilities in an emergency, though the release said they should only turn off gas if asked to by either local officials or CenterPoint Energy.
