Professor Gregory Turner-Rahman has been named permanent chair for the Department of Digital Technology and Culture (DTC) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Turner-Rahman’s appointment became official on Nov. 1.

“Professor Turner-Rahman brings a wealth of experience to this role and an exciting vision for the future of the Department of Digital Technology and Culture,” said CAS Dean Courtney Meeham. “I look forward to collaborating with him as he leads the department into its next chapter.”

Turner-Rahman’s academic work explores how immersive media has influenced how people perceive and construct their communities, relationships, and daily lives. He analyzes how the narrative and immersive qualities of film have become reflected in physical and virtual spaces. Turner-Rahman’s research has been published in the Journal of Design History, Fibreculture, and by the Routledge/American Film Institute.

“I am excited to be the chairperson of Digital Culture and Technology, a dynamic department with incredibly thoughtful and talented faculty, staff, and students,” said Turner-Rahman. “I am also proud to continue the tradition of excellence at WSU by preparing students for a quickly changing world.”

The WSU Department of Digital Technology and Culture bridges the space between creative production and critical exploration of the digital technologies that drive the world today. Students are taught using a multidimensional curriculum that spans web design, animation, video production, graphic design, game design, and augmented and virtual reality design.

“DTC exists at the bleeding edge of cultural and technological change,” said Turner-Rahman. “Through interactive experiences and media-rich projects, our students and faculty leverage new technologies to not only invent the future but to also communicate about the pitfalls, challenges, and promises of technological change.”
