After a flurry of eleventh-hour court rulings, Missouri’s redistricting saga is finally coming to a close. The U.S. Supreme Court blocked a federal judge’s ruling that ordered the state to use the map Republicans passed in 2025, meaning the state is now on track to hold the November elections under the map used in 2022 and 2024.
Last week, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the 2025 map was not legally in effect, due to a referendum effort organized by opponents. That’s despite the fact that the primary was already held under the new congressional lines. (The state has clarified that the winners of the August primary will remain on the general election ballot).
The 5th District, which was redrawn to strongly favor the GOP last year, now reverts back to a safe blue seat in Kansas City, and Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver will now easily win reelection.
