BOISE, Idaho — Golf is a sport that doesn’t always seem accessible to everyone, but a local group seeks to be a bridge for Latinos in the game of golf.
Los Golferos 208 was formed by Alejandro Montalván and a group of friends to open a space in the sport.
“Latinos can play golf too,” Montalvan said. “It’s not just a sport that’s, as they say, ‘for the rich,’ and for gringos, it’s a sport for everyone.”
The group was formed with the purpose of connecting Latino golfers in Idaho and sharing the love of the sport.
“The point is to bring people together, to connect, and well, to let everyone know that there are more than a few Latinos playing golf,” said Sergio Mendoza, founder of Los Golferos. “Here in the state, there are quite a few of us.”
Several have joined the group across the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley. Mendoza said the most important thing is for them to participate in golf in their own way.
“Sometimes I arrive there with my corridos, my norteña music, my rancheras, and here’s another guy playing cumbias and everything, and we hang out with our music,”Montalvan said.
Mendoza said one of the members joined Los Golferos through social media.
“He just started playing with all of us because he had sent the group a message and asked us when they were going to play,” Mendoza said.
Jose Velasquez, the member who discovered the group through social media, was motivated by the interest of the Latino community. Jose hopes it will evolve into a good cause.
“It would be nice if they started creating more groups like this and if they started creating groups for children,” Velasquez said. “Let’s see if they try to organize tournaments to raise funds for children.”
