United Cuts Denver-Winnipeg RouteWestJet’s Winnipeg Routes Also Under ThreatFlight Capacity Data

DENVER- Chicago-based United Airlines (UA) has suspended its year-round service between Denver (DEN) and Winnipeg (YWG) beginning January 2025, with current schedules showing the route will only resume for summer 2026. The service had operated daily using an Embraer 175 (E175).

The route’s pause coincides with the withdrawal of provincial subsidies by Manitoba, which also impacts other U.S.-Canada routes, including two WestJet (WS) services from Winnipeg to Atlanta (ATL) and Los Angeles (LAX), both now at risk of termination, Enilria reported.

United Cuts Denver-Winnipeg Route

United Airlines (UA) had consistently operated one daily flight between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG) using an E175 aircraft.

The current suspension affects flights from January through approximately April 2025, although the route appears set to return in summer 2026, as per schedule data.

This route’s removal comes amid recent changes in regional financial support. While United’s service was not previously identified as subsidy-dependent, the route’s viability appears to be affected by broader economic or strategic shifts in Manitoba’s aviation support strategy.

Market demand data is not available, but average daily capacity for July and October 2025 was projected at 74 seats.

WestJet’s Winnipeg Routes Also Under Threat

Two other cross-border routes from Winnipeg operated by WestJet (WS) now face a similar fate:

  • Winnipeg (YWG) – Atlanta (ATL): 5 flights per week
  • Winnipeg (YWG) – Los Angeles (LAX): 2 flights per week

Both routes were initially introduced with the backing of Manitoba-funded aviation subsidies. Nearly CAD $5 million has reportedly been spent, with the province confirming that funding will not be renewed. This decision, combined with a downturn in U.S.–Canada air traffic due to ongoing trade tensions, puts the long-term viability of these services in doubt.

The Atlanta (ATL) route supports connectivity with Delta Air Lines (DL), WestJet’s U.S. codeshare partner, through its major hub. This connection may offer the Atlanta service a lifeline, but the Los Angeles (LAX) flight appears particularly vulnerable.

Irony in Subsidy Cuts

The now-endangered LAX–YWG route was heavily lobbied for by Canada’s film and television sector to facilitate production links between Hollywood and Winnipeg.

Manitoba, with its favorable production incentives, has served as the filming location for numerous U.S. TV series and films.

Ironically, the flight introduced to support job-creating cross-border film projects may become a casualty of a broader economic conflict—trade disputes and the backlash over U.S. job offshoring. While the creative industry may lose a logistical advantage, the underlying cause remains politically and economically complex.
