The USMMA Mariners had an underwhelming season in 2024, posting their worst overall record since 2016 at 5-4 despite having multiple players return from their previous 7-3 season.
Junior starting quarterback Gervy Alota saw improvement from his 2023 sophomore campaign, throwing for 1,283 yards and 10 touchdowns through the nine games he appeared in. Alota was also quick on his feet, adding 539 more yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
It also helped that Alota had a reliable wide receiver in Talsen Smith, who has been one of the most talented assets for the Mariners through his four years of production. Smith hit a career-best 1,085 receiving yards last season, tallying 10 touchdowns and averaging 120 yards per game.
Smith earned D3football.com First Team All-Region, AFCA Second Team All-American, and All-NEWMAC First Team honors for his contributions in 2024.
Alota has one crucial year left with the Mariners if he decides to return, while Smith could also see even more improvement if he comes back for a graduate year. The duo could very well find their footing in one final season together to bring USMMA off the brink of a losing season.
Who Is The USMMA Football Head Coach?
Jameson Croall looks to enter his 14th season with USMMA and fourth year as head coach. Croall originally joined the Mariners staff as an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
In his first two years at the helm, Croall extended the Mariners’ winning-season streak to eight following successful campaigns in 2022 and 2023.
During his time as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Croall led the USMMA offense to multiple top-25 statistical standings in NCAA Division III football, including first in rushing offense in 2021.
