Vehicles catch fire inside Boston Big Dig ramp approaching Ted Williams Tunnel

Firefighters in the city of Boston responded to multiple cars that caught fire inside the tunnel ramp that approaches the eastbound side of the Ted Williams Tunnel on Friday afternoon. A photo shared by a WCVB viewer showed at least one vehicle engulfed in flames, with smoke billowing to the roof of the tunnel ramp. The Boston Fire Department said just after 4 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a fire involving three vehicles that the fire department said were involved in an accident and on fire inside the ramp to the tunnel. The fire happened in the tunnel connecting Interstate 93 northbound with the Mass Pike eastbound, just before the Ted Williams Tunnel. Video below: Vehicles on fire inside tunnelState police said several people got out of their car and fled, which led to additional cars catching fire.The Boston Fire Department shared several photos from inside the tunnel after the blaze, showing severe fire damage to three vehicles. “They were able to quickly extinguish two of the cars,” the fire department said on social media. “The other car was a hybrid which took longer to extinguish.”Deputy Chief James Greene said six people were inside the vehicles. Three were transported to Boston area hospitals. The companies did a great job to get access to from both ends of the tunnel to get water and extinguish the fire.Video from Sky 5 showed smoke coming from one of the ventilation buildings near Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood.Check latest traffic conditions here.”We heard a bunch of loud bangs,” Shaunna Lai, who was traveling to Logan Airport, said. “Next thing we know, we see … people running toward us out of their cars and saying, ‘Get out, get out of here, get out of here’ screaming.””We just basically left our cars open and ran out of there,” Lai said. “My two kids and my husband and I got out of there.”Lai said when they got out of the tunnel, more people were still running out. “Next thing we know, we see like complete darkness in there.”Have photos or video of the incident? MassDOT said two off-ramps from I-93 northbound would remain closed for several hours: the HOV eastbound ramp and the Frontage Road ramp.”The closure of these two ramps is expected to be in place into the evening as MassDOT inspectors will need to evaluate the pavement and other roadway assets to see if repairs will be needed,” the agency said in a news release.Anyone heading toward Boston’s Logan Airport, especially from Interstate 93 northbound, should anticipate severe delays and stoppages.Video below: Smoke rises from ventilation system during vehicle fire in Boston tunnel
