The Virginia Tech Hokies are 3-0 under James Franklin, and rather than simply pointing toward the 152 points the Hokies have scored, the underlying efficiency makes the offensive start even more impressive.

Virginia Tech is generating +0.34 EPA/Play with a 50.2% success rate, including +0.51 EPA/Pass and +0.21 EPA/Rush.
The Hokies have thrown for 992 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception, while the rushing attack has produced another 488 yards and 10 scores.
They’ve also been automatic when drives cross the opponent’s 20, going a perfect 16-for-16 in the red zone.
The matchup gets even better when you look at how Virginia Tech is finishing possessions.
The Hokies rank 14th nationally in finishing drives and 24th on third down, while the Boston College Eagles rank 116th and 123rd, respectively, in those categories.

It’s a bit of a flat spot for the Hokies coming off the massive win against Maryland, but Boston College is so poor defensively that it won’t matter.
Virginia Tech is also creating positive field position with its defense, which ranks No. 1 nationally in havoc and stuff rate.
When you’re betting a team total over, short fields are your best friend. Expect a ton of scores from the offense, and don’t be shocked if the defense chipped in some scores.

Boston College’s early defensive numbers look respectable on the surface, but there are several matchup-specific weaknesses that concern me.

Virginia Tech ranks third nationally in offensive completion percentage, while Boston College’s defense sits 128th in preventing completions.
That’s a brutal matchup against a Hokies passing attack that’s already averaging 8.63 yards per attempt.
Boston College also isn’t particularly well equipped to generate the negative plays necessary to consistently kill drives.
The Eagles rank just 48th in havoc, while Virginia Tech’s offense has done an excellent job staying ahead of the chains. They’ve also benefited from a multitude of turnovers.
The red-zone discrepancy is another issue, and let’s not forget they struggled to squeak by Maine last week at home.

Boston College has converted only six of 11 offensive red-zone trips, and while that doesn’t directly affect the Hokies’ team total, failed Boston College drives create field position and additional possessions for an offense that has yet to score fewer than 35.
Laying two touchdowns on the road is tough when you can isolate the best unit on the field. It’s better to rely on Franklin running up the score.

Virginia Tech’s defense ranks No. 1 nationally in havoc and stuff rate, while Boston College’s offense ranks 123rd in stuff rate allowed and has already thrown five interceptions.
If the Hokies consistently start possessions around midfield rather than their own 20, the scoring opportunities should pile up quickly.

Rather than asking Boston College to help us cash a full-game over, isolate Franklin’s offense and bet on another trip into the 30s.
