Walgreens hourly workers will now be required to work on holidays.

The pharmacy store chain is cutting paid vacation time for these workers on major holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What’s behind this change by Walgreens?

Dig deeper:

Walgreens eliminated six paid holidays for the workers. Bloomberg reported that the move occurred a month after Walgreens was purchased by the private equity firm Sycamore Partners.

Under the new company policy, Walgreens employees must work on holidays and will also be eligible for extra holiday pay.

In the past, full-time employees received pay even if they didn’t work on holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and the Fourth of July contingent upon the workers meeting specific requirements, like working at the organization for six months.

Walgreens announced in October 2024 that it planned to close roughly 1,200 stores over the next three years. FOX Business reported that the move was part of the company’s effort to cut underperforming locations nationwide.
