SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is preparing for what they’re calling “water main break season.”
According to their water outage map, there are several leaks that need to be repaired, with four of them listed as ‘priority one’.
That means the water pressure is impacting a large number of customers and high-priority services like hospitals.
On Wednesday, we spoke with the communications director for saws who told us more water main breaks are expected, with more happening between August and September.
They also say like other cities, San Antonio is facing the problem of aging infrastructure.
According to this map. These are the places where most of the aging infrastructure problems exist.
“We know that there are parts of towns that have higher rates of main breaks, and those are especially in the aging areas,” said . “We know also that it’s the iron pipes and the cement pipes that we are seeing break. We are replacing pipes, but it’s too soon to see if the new pipes we’re putting in are going to last. We want them to last 80, 90, 100 years or more.”
They also say refining technology is in the works to make sure ‘water outages’ are being addressed.
Still, SAWS anticipates 7,500 main breaks this summer.
