BOSTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – The Boston Celtics celebrated their NBA finals win in duckboat-style on Friday, and Western Mass News spoke with some people from our neck of the woods in the big city.
Our crews made the trip to Boston early Friday morning and we weren’t the only ones headed east on the Mass Pike.
80 miles stands between Boston and Springfield, but we ran into plenty of western Mass natives while outside the Convention Center, the ending point of the championship parade.
25 duck boats navigated a sea of 1 million fans, and Western Mass News found among them, Chicopee’s Ashley Marceau, who perfectly encapsulated what it means to be a Boston sports fan.
“I’ve been to three Patriots, one Red Sox, and now the Celtics [parade]. Just need to get the Bruins at some point,” she said. “I took today unpaid, so shout out to my boss for letting me take today off.”
Marceau told us she wasn’t missing today for anything.
Fortunately, our next friends didn’t have to miss much, considering Chicopee schools are out for summer.
“I woke up at six in the morning, rushed to get ready, then hopped in the car, hour ride. Got tickets for the train, walked to the hotel for a bit, then came here and I got front row seats,” 12-year-old Oliver Kulig explained.
That’s a long day for anybody, let alone a 12-year-old, but Oliver assured Western Mass News he’s happy to do it if it means he can watch Jayson Tatum celebrate like he did after Game Five.
