The origins of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico and the United States
The commemoration Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 is now a celebration of Mexican culture on both sides of the border.
- Columbus is home to Cinco de Mayo events beyond just food and drink specials.
- Activities include a 5K run, a pop-up market for Latino businesses and artists, and a dance party.
- Specialized social events are planned, including a singles mixer and a professional networking happy hour.
Cinco de Mayo isn’t all food and drink – just mostly.
Here are some celebrations of the Mexican holiday that are coming up around Columbus that might include tacos and tequila but aren’t created around the pairing. They include a fun run on the Southeast Side, a business networking happy hour in Northland, a dance party Downtown and a place for singles to mingle on the Near East Side.
